How much is a 3.5% down payment on a typical Houston home?

On a $340,000 home, a 3.5% FHA down payment is about $11,900. On a $300,000 loan amount, Texas down payment assistance programs can add roughly $9,000 to $15,000 toward that cash, before closing costs.
The Houston Association of Realtors has reported a median sale price in the Houston area roughly in the $330,000 to $350,000 range for several months in the first half of 2026, so the dollar figure moves with the home you choose. Down payment assistance programs generally calculate their 3% to 5% off the loan amount, not the purchase price, which is a different number.
