Do I have to be a first-time buyer to get down payment assistance in Houston?

Written by the Warens Financial Group education team · Reviewed by Franklin Warens, Mortgage Broker, NMLS #1249423

The short answer

It depends on the program. TDHCA My First Texas Home and the City of Houston Homebuyer Assistance Program generally require first-time buyer status, defined as not owning a home in the prior 3 years. TDHCA My Choice Texas Home and some TSAHC options can be open to repeat buyers.

Definitions of first-time buyer vary slightly by program, and some make exceptions, for example for buyers in certain target areas or veterans. If you have owned a home before, do not assume you are automatically ineligible; ask a licensed loan officer to check your situation against each program's current rules before ruling anything out.
