Does checking my credit score hurt it?

The short answer

Checking your own score is a soft inquiry and does not hurt it. Mortgage shopping creates hard inquiries, but multiple mortgage inquiries within a short window (typically 14 to 45 days) are usually treated as one for scoring purposes.

That scoring window exists so you can compare lenders without being penalized for shopping around. Reviewing your own reports before applying is also a good way to catch errors early; you can pull them free at AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute anything inaccurate.
